How Trade Finance Works

A typical documentary letter of credit transaction flow.

01

Contract & L/C Application

Buyer and seller agree on trade terms. Buyer applies to their bank for a letter of credit specifying the required documents.

02

L/C Issuance & Advising

Buyer's bank issues the L/C and sends it to the seller's bank (advising bank), who notifies the seller.

03

Shipment & Document Presentation

Seller ships the goods and presents compliant documents (invoice, B/L, packing list, etc.) to their bank.

04

Document Check & Payment

Banks verify document compliance. Upon approval, payment is released to the seller and documents are sent to the buyer.
